Sherif Emil is the Mirella and Lino Saputo Foundation Chair in Pediatric Surgical Education and Patient and Family-Centered Care in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He is also the Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, and Professor of Pediatric Surgery, Surgery, and Pediatrics at McGill University. Dr. Emil served as Director of the Harvey E. Beardmore Division of Pediatric Surgery at The Montreal Children’s Hospital from 2008 to 2024. He also founded, and currently directs, Canada’s first multidisciplinary Chest Wall Anomalies Center at the Shriners Hospital for Children, Canada. In a global role, he is the Pediatric Surgery Specialty Consultant and International Chief Medical Officer for Mercy Ships International.

Dr. Emil has written a number of editorials in the lay press and has been an advocate for human rights. He has been interviewed and featured by multiple media outlets. In 2012, Dr. Emil was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada for his service to children around the world and his academic accomplishments in pediatric surgery. In 2018, He received the E. P. Taylor Award from the McGill Alumni Association and the Haile Debas Prize for promotion of diversity from the McGill University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. In 2023, he was awarded the Montreal Chidlren’s Hospital Award of Excellence in Leadership, presented approximately once every decade to an exceptional leader. He received the 2024 Donald E. Meier Surgical Humanitarian Award from the American Pediatric Surgical Association.

Dr. Emil is one of the few pediatric surgeons in Canada appointed to an endowed chair, holding the Mirella and Lino Saputo Foundation Chair in Pediatric Surgical Education and Patient and Family Centered Care at the McGill University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences since July, 2018.
