Dr. Shu-Lin Guo is a distinguished anesthesiologist with more than 20 years of expertise in cardiothoracic anesthesia and perioperative medicine. A respected leader within the Taiwan Society of Anesthesiologists (TSA) and the Taiwan Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia (TSCVA), he is recognized for advancing patient safety, multidisciplinary teamwork, and high-quality surgical care.
Guided by a patient-centered philosophy, Dr. Guo has been a driving force behind Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) in Taiwan. In 2016, he led the establishment of a dedicated ERAS team and the implementation of comprehensive ERAS protocols at Cathay General Hospital, turning a vision of coordinated perioperative care into routine clinical practice.
His impact extends nationally. In 2019, he helped found the Taiwan Chapter, ERAS Society, strengthening nationwide dissemination and professional engagement. His leadership also contributed to a major policy milestone: ERAS being incorporated into Taiwan’s National Patient Safety Goals in 2022.
Dr. Guo has also championed the alignment of clinical outcomes with economic sustainability. By demonstrating ERAS benefits—fewer complications, shorter length of stay, and better recovery—he advocated successfully for National Health Insurance (NHI) support for ERAS team-based care. Under this value-based direction, Taiwan has begun adopting payment models that recognize and reward measurable improvements in outcomes and efficiency, including gain-sharing approaches that reinvest ERAS-generated savings into care delivery.
Through sustained clinical leadership and policy advocacy, Dr. Guo has helped ERAS as a scalable, sustainable framework for perioperative excellence in Taiwan, influencing both practice standards and health-system reform
